About the position
The Firefighter Recruit position is a critical role within the City of Maricopa's Fire Department, aimed at preventing the loss of life and property through a variety of emergency response activities. Firefighters are responsible for fire suppression, emergency medical services, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, and public education regarding fire and life safety. This position operates under the direct supervision of a Fire Captain and adheres to established standard operating procedures, while also allowing for some independent judgment in emergency situations. Firefighters will engage in physically demanding tasks that include operating hose lines, performing rescue operations, and responding to emergencies under stressful conditions. The role requires the ability to wear personal protective equipment, including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), and to work in extreme temperatures for extended periods. Firefighters must be capable of climbing multiple flights of stairs while carrying heavy equipment, searching for and rescuing victims in hazardous conditions, and advancing water-filled hose lines over significant distances. In addition to firefighting duties, the position involves administering emergency medical care, conducting training for department personnel, and participating in community education activities. Firefighters are also responsible for the maintenance and repair of firefighting equipment and may respond to specialized emergency calls. The role demands critical thinking and problem-solving skills, particularly in high-pressure environments, and requires effective communication with team members and the public.
Responsibilities
- Perform fire-fighting tasks including hose line operations, extensive crawling, lifting and carrying heavy objects, and forcible entry.
- Conduct rescue operations and other emergency response actions under stressful conditions.
- Wear personal protective equipment and SCBA while working in extreme temperatures.
- Climb multiple flights of stairs while carrying heavy equipment and tools.
- Search for and rescue victims in hazardous conditions and low visibility.
- Advance water-filled hose lines from fire apparatus to occupancy, negotiating obstacles.
- Operate fire apparatus or other vehicles in emergency mode with lights and sirens.
- Engage in critical problem-solving during physical exertion in hazardous environments.
- Communicate effectively while wearing protective gear under high background noise.
- Assist in overhauling, salvage, and clean-up operations after emergencies.
- Participate in drills and training related to emergency medical services and fire suppression.
- Engage in public education and community relations activities.
- Maintain and repair firefighting equipment and facilities.
- Respond to emergency calls for specialized services such as hazardous materials and technical rescues.
- Administer emergency medical care and perform CPR and intubation as needed.

Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Arizona Certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification.
- Successful completion of Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT).
- Valid Arizona driver's license with no major driving citations in the past 39 months.
- State of Arizona CPR certification.
- Fit for duty certification based on NFPA 1582 when appropriate.
Nice-to-haves
- Successful completion of a Fire recruit academy in Arizona.
- Military experience with honorable discharge.
- Associates Degree in Fire Science.
- Previous firefighting experience.
