About the position

The Public Safety Dispatcher I/II position at the City of Tracy involves receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls for police and public safety units. The role requires effective communication, quick decision-making, and the ability to operate various communication equipment. The dispatcher will perform administrative duties, maintain records, and provide support to field units while ensuring compliance with legal guidelines and departmental policies.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and evaluate police and emergency calls, and related business calls for the City.
  • Dispatch public safety emergency units according to established procedures and policies.
  • Maintain contact with field units, accounting for their location and status.
  • Operate computer, telephone, and radio console simultaneously while performing dispatching activities.
  • Log call data in a written or automated format and monitor calls after initial dispatch.
  • Enter, update, and retrieve records from teletype database and law enforcement information databases.
  • Act as a liaison to the public and representatives of other agencies for the department.
  • Maintain accurate departmental and law enforcement records and files.
  • Attend necessary training and shift briefing sessions.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to graduation from the twelfth (12th) grade.
  • Public Safety Dispatcher I: Two (2) years of general clerical experience involving public contact.
  • Public Safety Dispatcher II: Two (2) years of dispatch experience equivalent to Public Safety Dispatcher I with the City of Tracy.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license upon appointment.
