Decedent Care Driver, Willed Body Program ID - 13559

About the position

UT Southwestern Medical Center is seeking a dedicated Decedent Care Driver for the Willed Body Program. This role is crucial in assisting the WBP with the transportation of donors from various locations, including residences, hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare facilities. The assignments will primarily be based in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex area, but may also extend throughout Texas and potentially into Oklahoma and Louisiana. The Decedent Care Driver will receive specialized training to support families in completing donation consent forms and will handle death calls while in the office. Additionally, the driver will assist other Willed Body staff as needed, ensuring that all operations run smoothly and efficiently. The position involves operating a motorized vehicle to transport donors to the Medical Examiner's Office and/or the Willed Body Program. Responsibilities include receiving, placing, and identifying bodies in the morgue, verifying identification through armbands and compartment labels, and releasing bodies to authorized personnel. The driver will also be responsible for maintaining vehicle operating records, reporting necessary maintenance and repairs, and performing minor routine maintenance tasks such as refueling and checking tire pressure, oil, water, and batteries periodically. This role is essential in providing respectful and dignified care to donors and their families during a sensitive time.

Responsibilities

  • Operate motorized vehicle to transport donors from place of death to Medical Examiner's Office and/or the Willed Body Program.
  • Receive, place, and identify bodies in the morgue, verifying identification through armbands and compartment labels.
  • Release bodies to authorized persons.
  • Maintain vehicle operating records and report needed maintenance and repairs.
  • Perform minor and routine maintenance on the vehicle, including refueling and checking tire pressure, oil, water, and batteries periodically.
  • Assist families in completing donation consent forms and handle death calls while in the office.
  • Assist other Willed Body staff as needed.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED required.
  • At least one (1) year of related work experience required.
  • Valid State of Texas Driver's License required.
  • Attendance in a school of mortuary science or work experience in a morgue setting preferred.
  • Must have a good attitude and work well with others.
  • Ability to lift, pull, and push at least 150 lbs; training is provided.
  • Clean driving record required (no outstanding tickets or warrants).
  • Must be available to work all weekends and holidays.
  • Flexible schedule required, other than school commitments.
  • Background check required (no felony convictions).
